If you like this duet, and I am a tremendous Dire Strait fan, check out Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed videos. Chet said Jerry was the best "back porch" picker he ever sat down and played with. Jerry passed away, I think, in 2008.

It's super but ... his Sydney 86 interpretation in DS concert (Guy Fletcher - playing keyboards here - was also there :-)) is still may favorite version (check that out too, you won't regret, trust me). I love Les Pauls and their unmistakable sound (and what a legendary Les Paul that is ... 1958 ... priceless) but in this song, the overdrive is ... just overkill in my opinion. I think Mark realized that too and avoided it as much as he could towards the end. Anyway, **THIS** is music !

What really surprises me is that he plays this with his bridge (or bridge+middle, can't see that) pickup, he used to play it with the neck and middle! Also interesting that it still sounds quite similar to the old days while bridge/middle usually sounds a bit darker...

I saw this on the shelf at Wal-Mart, and I got excited. I had heard that this was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. And not only that, but it was an MTV special, and MTV is always right. So I played this, and I immediately broke the CD in two. Eric Clapton's moniker, Slowhand, is fitting, as he plays slowly, with no shreds or epic guitar solos. In one of the songs, he starts being emo about his dead son, who jumped out of a window, probably after listening to his father's music. LOL

Wow. No kidding man. Our best FM radio in the US, say Montpelier for example, are already so watered down they are not allowed to play songs that are longer than 3:17 minutes. I exaggerate but some of your customary north american zombie-like statements really put the face plant into modern prevailing westerlies, at a rate of wind energy, at about as accurately as my grandfather used to guage it. yes i agree with you ... love the atmosphere he creates with certain numbers. have you heard anything by porcupine tree,,, they are another atmospheric sounding band,,, not as creative as mark but ,, have a listen to some of the numbers by them ,, download e.g. black dahlia, arriving somewhere but not here, remember me lover, stars die. its more proggy then marks music ,,, but there is so much good stuff out there

@coffeepoint Quite true. One great thing about Knopfler. It appears to me that many great musicians have sort of a "shelf life" when it comes to songwriting. Dylan hasn't written much at all in the last two decades for example. The Stones best work was when Mick Taylor was still with them. But Knopfler has a touch, a way of staying sharp regardless of age which I enjoy and respect.

I've heard a few people say they don't like Mark Knopfler because he has a "boring guitar style". I just can't see how these people don't get what Mark is about, every one of his songs are incredibly well composed, with fantastic, interesting, textured guitar most of the time. Mark is a true guitar hero that occasionally gets lumped into 80s rock by ignorant people who think Dire Straits are shitty 80s rock without checking out for themselves.. Music owes Mark respect. @pjane5 yeah I will....the band is currently on tour..in Denver right now I think..well worth a visit if you can make it...the shows are often better than the recordings. Look up GET LUCKY tour with Mark Knopfler..sa far the folks are in raptures about this show. Today is April 20 2010 and a lot of you should be able to pick a venue near you IF any tickets are available.

@dergrossen I will. It is good to know it is not all gone. "Edmund Fitzgerald" came to mind right away. We do our best to save horses from slaughter so this reminds me of what could have happened to my majestic Shire mare (many people call Shires Clydes here in the US) who at 5 is only beginning her life and will die of old age never to be hoisted and rendered while possibly still conscious. google imzadi the shire

People always rave about Clapton. But Eric can't play like crystal clean country water pickers of country music, like John Sebastian wrote about in his Lovin' Spoonful song Nashville Cats. I don't how those country music players do it, but they can play like no other. Rock and roll guitar players can't do that. Or don't do that, as I should say.
